Spirulina belongs to the micro-algae and grows in warm, alkaline environments with high humidity. Its characteristic colour is due to chlorophyll (the main plant pigment) and the phycocyanin it contains, a protein found exclusively in spirulina. It is rich in protein, B vitamins, especially B12, phenylalanine, iron and phosphorus. It is considered a natural food supplement and a superfood.
